Obituary of Betty Jean Hinkie

Mrs. Betty Jean Powell Hinkie of Silsbee Texas passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 6, 2019 at the age of 92.

She was born on August 10, 1926 to Claude Powell and Bertha Emmons Powell in Wallace, LA and attended grade school in that community.  

She was married to Jarrell Bradford “JB” Hinkie for 59 years before his death in 2007.  They started their family of five children in Jasper and moved to Silsbee in 1964.

She is proceeded in death by two sisters Mary Jane and Sally and son Jay Hinkie.  She is survived by four children Marsha Dubois and husband Steve of Williamston, SC, Kay Wright and husband Bill of Silsbee, Dwayne (Dee) Hinkie and wife Arlene of Beaumont, Pat Hinkie of Silsbee and Jay’s wife Rhonda still resides in Silsbee. JB and Betty had nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren plus numerous nieces, nephews and their families living throughout the southern US.

Betty was best known in Southeast TX and Southwest LA as being owner of Betty’s Bloomers Nursery for over 35 years before turning the business over to daughter Kay.  Betty completed college at Northwestern State University and worked as a registered Dietitian in various roles including an intern in a Chicago Hospital and a period with Hardin County WIC program.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., with services following at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Farmer Funeral Home Chapel, located at 415 N. Fourth Street in Silsbee, Texas.

Interment will follow at R.S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery, located at 820 S. Third Street in Silsbee, Texas.
