Obituary of Robert Lee Herbst

Robert Lee Herbst, 96, of Lumberton, passed away Friday, February 22, 2019 surrounded by his loved ones. Robert was born May 18, 1922 in Steubenville, Ohio. He proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, serving in both the European Theater and the Pacific Theater, where he earned his rank as First Lieutenant. After the war, Robert met the love of his life, Barbara Coe and then married her before graduating from the University of Michigan, where he received his degree in engineering. He then went to work for Texaco for the majority of his career, first in Tulsa, OK, then in Casper, Wy, then Houston, finally settling in Port Arthur. After his retirement, Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed spending time round dancing with his wife, Barbara. He was a great man who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years, Barbara Coe Herbst; and parents, Howard and Murl Herbst.

Robert is survived by his children, Douglas C. Herbst of Lumberton, TX, and Margaret H. Breashears and husband, Eddie of Allen, TX; grandchildren, Anita Herbst Baird and husband, Robert, Sandra Hearl Wellman and husband, Nicholas Thomas of San Antonio, TX, Robert Herbst Breashears and wife, Wanda Carter of Sherman, TX, 4 great-grandchildren, Patrick Gatlin, Calvin Wellman, Noah Wellman, and Averi Wellman; and a host of loving friends.

Robert’s family will receive friends at Farmer Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m., officiated by Reverend Ray McNames.

The Family of Robert Herbst would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Village Creek Rehabilitation and Nursing Home for their extreme kindness and loving care they gave to their loved one, and to the caregivers of Montebello Home Care who spent many long days and many long nights providing exemplary compassionate care.
